A buddy of mine bought a 360 in November of last year and his system crapped out on him 2 weeks ago. As of right now it's getting repaired. I'm still not convinced that Microsoft has stepped up their quality yet. Doesn't it make more sense to produce a better quality system than to use cheap parts that'll later be replaced by the same cheap parts when repairing? And how many times can Microsoft keep doing it without losing money? I'm sure Microsoft is losing quite a bit of money on these consoles that have crapped out.

    What does this mean?

Do you honestly foresee a war so catastrophic that it would wipe out the world's largest trading partner, 5% of the population, and the second oldest written Constitution?

If America has been stubborn enough to survive a civil war continuous social conflict, and the metric system, it isn't going anywhere.

    Ah...the metric system. Such a nightmare. :D

I think eventually more and more "American stuff" will use the metric system. At this point on most "large objects" it doesn't really make that much difference. And the "pros" trained in this stuff can use both. In the small scales even Americans use the metric system. Especially when more nanotech products start hitting the markets, ppl will get use to the metric system. I mean, look at the iPod nano! :p

I just back from Best Buy after pre-ordering an iphone 4. There were 4 models to choose from, White or Black, 16gb or 32gb. There was a $50 deposit, for which I received a BB gift card which will be used when I pick up the phone, and I now have an scheduled appointment at BB so I'm guaranteed to get it on the release date - plus, I won't have to wait in any lines when I get there.

Prior to going to BB, I tried to order a phone online through Apple as well as AT&T. The Apple website got stuck at the point where I selected the phone I wanted. The AT&T website did not show the iPhone 4 as an option. Don't bother calling AT&T to try an order the new iphone - they will not take your order and will just refer you somewhere else.

How did you secure an appointment to get set up? Which color did you get? I preordered 2 white iPhones 1st at the local Best Buy, but they weren't able to set an appointment for receiving and setting up the iPhone but said they'll call me "soon" to set one up.

Phil Schiller is such a bad presenter.

And yes, you are seeing a transfer of power here - whether Steve is sick only he knows I guess.

I'm not going to speculate as to Steve's health. It's bad karma and I wish him perfect health for his family and friends, not for Apple and its customers.

I am responding to this post only to put some balance into the thinking here.

One thing everyone seems to be forgetting--or doesn't know--is that succession planning is very common in large companies, especially with "older" CEO'S.

A VERY likely scenario, regardless of Steve, is the board realized too much of Apple's identity was tied into one person. A good board would ensure that Apple will exist long after Steve's retirement. So, it is not surprising to see more of Apple's executive team being profiled.

Steve could be in perfect health and plan to stay at Apple for another decade or two. Today's performance on stage, changing Apple from a one-man-show to a show by a world class team of executives is simply smart business which will help ensure the longevity of Apple.

Now, I do acknowledge after Steve's scare, Steve and Apple's Board probably accelerated the succession planning process. This is simply smart business and the responsibility of the Board and CEO.

But what you saw today doesn't necessarily mean anything other than smart business. Sure, I could be wrong, and for the sake of Steve and his family I pray that I am not. But let's not be so quick to assume the very worst.

My iPhone 4 rocks. I feel the need to share my joy since 80% are complaining. Yes I am a fanboy but my iPhone 4 works flawlessly. I can hold it in my left hand, right hand, foot and it still works. I thought maybe it was just my city but I am out and about this week traveling and it works like a charm. Someone needs to tell Steve that I must have his unit.

I like the part of the law that gives fines, and I think jail time to anyone forcing a woman to wear one, but if someone actually wants to wear a veil they should be allowed to do it.

I'll get slammed for this - but I don't care. Apple is playing a big part in the dumbing down of (some of) society by taking control/options away from users and keeping a walled garden. And I don't want/intend this to turn into a debate about walled/not; security; etc. My point is - that Apple and several other companies/educational institutions and even parents are increasingly participating in the dumbing down of America/other countries.

Apple doesn't want users to have to worry about x, y and z. That's GREAT. It really is. But at the same time - but taking users away from understanding the technology they are using - they are also contributing to the very thing they are (in Steve's latest speech) trying to avoid.

I'd love a car that is "maintenance free." Until the car actually needed some work done. If I have to rely on a 3rd party to do that maintenance and I can't do it myself - then it means those skills will never be learned or used (naturally.) I don't always see this as a positive.

I'm able to do a lot of electrical work and computer/video/etc repair work on my own because I was able to (when I was young) take things apart, learn how things worked inside and out.

    I'll stop rambling...

Yeah it was hard to follow...but nobody should "slam" you for it. Stay well

    Hello kind folks of MacRumors.com-

I am wishing for help and advice deciding what type of hardware to purchase for a 30TB server. It must meet the following requirements:

30TB RAID (Redundancy important for backup purposes)
Remote Accessibility in that I would like to be able to pull files from it anywhere that I have an internet connection.
Macintosh friendly it does not need to run OS X Server, it just needs to connect without hassle to Macs.

This will be used for at my office for archiving video. We may want to use Final Cut Server to sort the files in the future. I have been tasked with building this setup and am hoping for suggestions from one of the brightest communities on the web. :D

Your time in responding is much appreciated.

    :apple:

If you insist on doing this in a single box, consider running Linux. There are quite a number of good vendors for reliable, high-density Linux boxes and storage systems.

You can run the netatalk package on the Linux server, which would allow network connections use the AFP (Apple) protocol. You can even use the Linux server as a Time Machine server, with the right settings. Of course, you can also run Samba to support Windows users if needed. I wouldn't use Samba or NFS for Mac users when AFP is a perfect match and is available and pretty well-supported on Linux.

However, given the amount of storage you need, it probably would make sense - as others have at least hinted - to get a dedicated SAN box for the storage, and a separate box for remote access. This might be, for example, a Cisco VPN product, or a Linux box.

Not sure if your 10 users are just the external users, or both internal and external? If it's 10 users total, a single Linux box might be reasonable for the whole thing.

Having said that I ordered mine Tuesday and it still says a ship date of 26th April, that is 6 weeks. I hope they send it earlier as I would be a little pissed if someone ordered today and got it earlier than the 26th April.

    I mis-counted 5 weeks.

And the order date just changed to 21st April that is still 4 weeks and 2 days from order date. Ironically though because of the weekend it is due to be delivered on the 26th, so 2 days earlier than before....lol

I don't think the iPad 2 was a "half-upgrade". The iPad 2 was completely redesigned, much much slimmer, a lot lighter, two cameras, much faster... I don't think an update soon, this fall, would be so important. This is a full update and I expect the iPad to have a regular release cycle of about a year.
