The warranty is void if something goes wrong from you incorrectly installing the RAM.
Apple Care terms and conditions are pretty much worded that way. They do not cover damage caused from an untrained person installing things into the machine.
So, if you don't damage the machine while installing the RAM, there's no problem.
To add, the RAM install is cake, so no need to worry too much about that as long as you're not careless.

AWESOME thanks for those sounds. I knew I'd come to the right place!
I should get out my old MacAddict CD's that have all the old demos on them and re-live my obsession with Marathon and Escape Velocity... ahh those were the days...

I'd like to get a new 17" MBP and I'm wondering what the verdict is on SSD's... are third-party drives still a better option than the ones that come stock from Apple? If so, which brand/model is best? Also, what's the status with TRIM support and garbage collection in all this? Does Apple's current OS/hardware have either of these yet? If not, will Lion have TRIM support?

I once had a CRT that did that, very annoying. A noise doesn't mean there is a serious problem though, just don't switch it off put it on sleep.

It has a great selection for a price cheaper than most CDs.
Albeit at a lesser quality. But I agree with you.
I'm not claiming to speak for others, but I personally dont mind not being able to play my music on anything else, given there is nothing out there better than the iPod...
I really dont know what position to take on this :)

The real deal on resolution independance, is that instead of the UI being made up of images, PDFs I believe, it will be drawn using vectors. so a OS can scale anything to any size, and it will never become pixalized, because it's being drawn fresh using math instead of images.
No, you can still use bitmaps. They just get scaled to whatever size. (Of course, they need to be reasonably high-res.) It's impossible to do anything other than really basic textures with just vectors.
Anyone who for some reason doesn't understand resolution independence just needs to know one thing: there isn't a downside. Don't worry about it. A lot of computer games are resolution independent these days (including the UI) and nobody freaks out about that, eh?

Well thank you for taking the time to reply. It is appreciated. I went to that site; I did not know it is a $50 piece of software. It bugs me still that it is free on one new Mac and not on another that essentially costs the same.
Alas I dont know how to subvert the process, I am a bit of a newbie. The processes you kindly assume I know I do not. You are welcome to clue me in. I am still curious if the software can be had from my family member's eMac disc somehow.

I have a mid 2010 MacPro that has had some video problems ever since I got it. I am trying to determine if it is a cable problem or some problem with the video card. I have a monitor connected via the DVI port and this has no problems. I have my TV connected via a minidisplayport with a MDP to HDMI adapter to HDMI cat 5 extender. This is what is giving me problems. Swapping out all this will cost over $100 so I would like to confirm that it is not a hardware issue with the computer if possible.
I run the TV as a second monitor ans when I first set it up at the beginning of the year it would intermittently not detect the TV. I fiddled with things and removed some HTPC programs that were throwing a lot of things to the console logs. I finally got it working just fine for about 2 months. Now all of a sudden it will not always detect the TV. What I need to do to get it working again is to unplug the MDP plug and wait about 15-20 seconds then carefully plug it back in. It may take several times but eventually it will work. Just fiddling with the cables does nothing. There are times I get video but either no audio or audio with a lot of electronic distortion. The only way to fix this is to restart the computer. I am using XBMC as my HTPC software. What is new now is when I am watching a recording the video will go black and the audio will stop for 15-30 sec then the video comes back but no audio for another 15-20 seconds. I can rewind the recording to before it happened and watch with no problem through that section so i don't think it is a corrupted file.
I have looked through console logs but I have no idea what I am looking for if there is a hardware issue. Any thoughts on how to determine if it is a video card issue before I start changing all the wires to the TV? One though I did have was to get a MDP to DVI adapter and connect my monitor to the other MDP port. If it is a MDP port problem then is should happen with both the monitor and the TV.

"Top News: Steve Jobs Taking Leave of Absence"
My apologies if someone has already posted this, but I'm getting increasingly irritated by this new 'feature' on the main page.
When something was important (like his leave of absence or a countdown to an event), that space was used for that purpose and removed when it was no longer relevant.
Now, you have a permanent space for it and it's almost like crying wolf. When something important really needs to go there, most people will likely ignore it because you've had the same "Top News" there for weeks.
I could go on, but I think you got my point. Leave good enough alone until a true redesign.
Thanks,
theheadguy

hi thanks all for your help. i just checked and i dont have keynote and here in the UK its 50 - ouch! i can't afford that either, at the moment im trying to find a way to pay of apple protection for my ibook at 200 - so i think iWorks will have to wait a while. it was hard enough getting the money to pay for iLife '05 Up-To-Date which should have come free. ahh! i love my iBook and all, and i thought once i shelled out all the money for it, i would have to pay anything on top. how wrong could i be! 200 insurance, iLife 15, ms works 4 apple 100 OR iWork at 50. it all adds up!
any other ideas or should i give in now?
thanks again though!

Finally. I've been flip-flopping for months over whether to get a Nook or a Kindle. I liked the Kindle more, but not being able to borrow library book almost nudge me towards the Nook. With this piece of news, Kindle is the clearly the reader for me.

i have a couple Lexar 16GB 233X cards for my 7D and they work great. Shot lots of video at 1080x24 and 30 and also 720x60 and absolutely no problems with write speed, even for full length (4GB) videos. Continuous shooting at the 8fps on the 7D is also great, very long bursts capable with the 233X (approximately 30MB/s) cards.
The 400x will perform great for you (although remember there are a couple different speed multipliers for '_ _ _ x'... so the actual number of MB/s may vary) 300x is around 45MB/s (not mbps like you posted).
Hope that helps!

Hi Everyone,
This is my first macrumors.com posting! Nice to meet you, *wave, wave*. :) Im a pretty indecisive person so the questions Ive been grappling with over the past few weeks have been pretty overwhelming! (Sorry for the long posting, but please read it. I need your help!)
Basically, heres the dilemma. My 12 Powerbook (bought in Aug 2003) stopped liking me sometime ago (about a year) and has been giving me kernel panics. Now I get them 2-3 times a day! (In fact, Im writing this posting in Word so I can save it because Ive had 2 kernel panics while writing this! Darn, I hope I can get something for it on eBay.) So it is definitely time to move on especially since Ive been to the Apple Store several times and they always have a different story as to how to fix it. And no I dont have Apple Care. (Most recently they told me it would cost $350 just to send it to CA to look at!! Forget that!)
So after reading several macrumors.com postings =) Ive decided to order a 14 iBook with Apple Care protection and a 60 GB iPod (w/ $179 education mail-in rebate). Problem is that I want to order an iBook special order with 80 GB (I need the extra 20 GB for all my graphic design stuff and Im terrified of external drives, have heard they die on people! Yikes!). The Apple Store in the mall wont do special orders in store so I have to order it online.
I heard that the Apple Credit Card is offering 120 days same as cash so I applied for it online and got approved for only enough to cover the laptop. But in order to get the $179 iPod rebate I have to order them both at the same time. Therefore I have to use 2 credit cards. Apple Online accepts only 1 credit card. Same goes for 1-800-My-Apple.
So I sauntered over to the Computer Store on campus. The people there were very friendly and helpful and offered to do a special order and use 2 credit cards. They also offered to call up Apple Credit Card and see if I could get 120 days same as cash even though its not directly from Apple. But they said No. So I waited a few days for inspiration to decide for me. Got worried about waiting (Sept 24th is last day for rebate and PB is failing) and so ordered from the Computer Store on campus, put down 10 percent, and walked away with a new 60 GB iPod.
Then this morning I got a call from Apple Credit Card saying that guess what? They got a call from someone (the computer store?) and now they can up my limit to just barely cover 14 iBook plus Apple Care plus 60 GB iPod. So now I can order it online. Good news and bad news. I called up the Computer Store and they said theyd cancel my order and refund my 10 percent down payment if I brought in the new 60 GB iPod that I would receive from the online order (I already opened the iPod I brought home from the store). But now Im wondering if its worth it to order it online anymore. I would save $120 tax plus $100 in finance charges and might be able to use a coupon code if I can find an unused one on this website. However Id have to go through the hassle of canceling my order from the Computer Store (plus my guilt that they went through all that trouble and didn't land a sale).
THE DECISION: I need to decide whether to order from Apple Education Online Store or from the Computer Store on campus. I NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO ASAP! (Because Ill have to cancel the order at the Computer Store very soon if I decide to do so!)
Online Advantages:
No Tax (saves $120)
Maybe use coupon?
120 days same as cash financing (Saves about $100 or so)
Can charge everything to one finance-free card (refund $ to other CC used in down payment)
Less worry about whether the iPod rebate will be verified (no split payments and also direct from Apple)
Online Disadvantages:
Hassle of canceling order at Computer Store & bringing back new online iPod
May not get Apple Care (I heard that if Apple notices that its sent to a FL address they cancel the Apple Care? Call and check?)
Must wait longer to get computer (comes from China, 1-2 weeks)
Can only talk to Apple Customer Service if there are problems
Purely speculation, but I hear that some iBooks are screwy and maybe direct from China iBooks are more screwy than if you order it from the store?
In Store Advantages:
Get computer faster (Next Tuesday, Sept. 20)
Direct people I can talk to if I have any problems
Can order more products now on my increased limit Apple credit card since I've already charged part of my order to another card (Can order Apple Mouse and Keyboard and cases for iPod and iBook)
In Store Disadvantages:
Wont get same-as-cash financing (Will lose about $100+)
Must pay Tax (Will lose about $120)
Must go to school to pick it up (not shipped directly)
P.S. Once I make my decision Ill post what option I decided to go with! Thanks for your help! :)

OF course you do - need to repurchase. Do you really expect Apple to give away higher resolution content to those that already have the 320x versions?
If so, you need a reality check. Really.
It appears that you need to repurchase your pre iTunes 7.0 music videos if you want the improved quality. I experimented by repurchasing one of my pre iTunes 7.0 music videos. I now have two copies of the same music video. One at the old resolution; the other at the new resolution.
I believe this to be unsatisfactory. This is not a format change, but an incremental quality improvement. My computer is authorised, my account is valid, and my downloads legal.
Apple is getting two bites at the cherry!

Lee, I'm sorry... but the definition of 'sensational' is not the same as 'anything Lee disagrees with'. Would you call the thread started today by rdowns called "Mike Huckabee... and American Dick" sensational? How about the one called "Wisconsin Public workers stand up to Republicans." I find that one pretty sensational. Grow up.
May I also ask why you're not confident enough with your own views to answer the poll? Also, what exactly is 'innacurate' with my thread?
And yet I'm the guy you refuse to talk to?

Hi all,
Background: I have an iphone 3G and a MacBook Pro. Have had both for over a year, long term Mac user and have had a good relationship with both products, we have up until recently been a happy family.
Problem: On the last sync between iphone and laptop, I seem to have ended up with duplications.
- Artist List: I can have an artist listed twice, for the same song.(note this is not consistent across the board just for some).
- Song List: I can have songs listed twice, for the same artist.(note this is not consistent across the board just for some).
- Songs duplicated in albums: Song 1 will be in there twice, thus a playlist within that album will run as song 1 followed by song 1 again, song 2 followed by song 2 again and so on and so on. Not fun if you just want to hear an album as an album. (note this is not consistent across the board just for some).
- Album artwork: A song will be listed with the artwork for the album it appears on and then be listed again with the artwork for the single it was released with. Is this because somewhere in itunes store land when you go "search for album artwork" it has some kind of confusion meltdown and doesn't know which one to give you? (Note, this happens with not only albums I've purchased through itunes but also for albums imported from purchased hard-copy CDs). Again, this is also not a consistent error across the board, just in some instances and not others. How can you get a single and an album version when you only purchase one through itunes? And how can you get a single version and an album version when it's imported directly from a purchased CD? (weird).
I've also noticed similar problems when I go to sync the calendars. It's duplication hell.
Question: Is there a way to delete songs out of lists on the iphone? Or am I going to have to do some major surgery i.e. reverting the whole thing back to factory settings? If I do have to go back to factory settings will I then need to also re-input all my other stuff as well such as address book entries?
I'm pretty worried that the next time I sync, I'm going to end up with triplets.
Thanks for all help in advance.
